"Why Do You Need to Know All That?” Why Your Medical History Matters

One of the questions we hear most often during consultations is:

"Why do you need to know all of this?"

And it's a fair question.

After all, if you're coming in for an aesthetic treatment, what does your asthma, thyroid medication or previous surgery have to do with your lips or skin?

The answer is… Quite a lot.

You're not just a treatment

One thing we will always say is that we never just treat a face; we treat a person, whole.

Every patient arrives with a unique medical history, medications, lifestyle and goals. All of these things help us determine whether a treatment is appropriate and how your body is likely to respond.

Your body doesn't separate your skin from your health

Your skin reflects what's happening inside your body. Hormones, stress, medications, autoimmune conditions, nutrition and medical history all influence healing, inflammation and collagen production. Ignoring those factors simply isn't safe.

Small details can make a big difference

Sometimes something that seems completely unrelated can change our recommendations.

For example:

  • Blood-thinning medication may increase bruising.

  • Antibiotics mean treatment should be postponed.

  • Autoimmune conditions may affect healing.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding change which treatments are appropriate.

  • Previous filler treatments influence future planning.

That's why there are no "quick consultations.” Every question has a purpose.

We aren't being nosey

Patients sometimes apologise for having a long list of medications. Please don’t. The more information we have, the better we can look after you. Every answer helps us build a complete picture so we can recommend treatments safely.

Why honesty matters

Sometimes patients worry that telling us about a medical condition means we won't treat them. In reality, most medical conditions don't stop people having treatments. They simply help us tailor treatment appropriately.

Our goal is never to catch people out. It's to keep you safe!

The safest treatment starts with a conversation

Medical history isn't paperwork.

It's one of the most important parts of your appointment.

Because behind every great result is a clinician who took the time to understand the whole patient, not just the concern that brought them through the door.
