Hi everyone! I’m Kate, a registered nurse prescriber and aesthetic injector, and today I want to talk about a trend I’ve been seeing all over social media: face taping.

From influencers to TikTok skincare “gurus,” it seems like everyone’s giving it a try—but let’s talk about the science (or lack thereof) behind it, and what actually works if you’re serious about reducing wrinkles and keeping your skin youthful.

What Is Face Taping?

Face taping involves placing strips of tape on areas of the face (usually overnight) in an attempt to “freeze” facial movements, prevent creasing, and supposedly smooth out fine lines and wrinkles. The idea is that by keeping your facial muscles still—particularly while you sleep—you’ll stop wrinkles from forming or getting worse.

Sounds similar to something else, doesn’t it? Yep—Botox, but with adhesive.

Does It Actually Work?

Let’s cut to the chase: face taping is a gimmick.

While taping may create a temporary smoothing effect or reduce puffiness from fluid retention, it does nothing to address the underlying causes of wrinkles: muscle movement, collagen loss, elastin breakdown, and environmental damage. Once you take the tape off and go about your day, your muscles will continue to contract, and the lines will return.

Worse, repeatedly using tape on the delicate skin of your face can cause irritation, allergic reactions, and even damage your skin barrier—especially if you're pulling tape on and off daily.

What Actually Works for Wrinkles?

If you’re truly looking to prevent or minimize wrinkles, here’s what I recommend—as both a nurse and someone who genuinely wants the best outcomes for her patients:

1. Botox (Neuromodulators)

Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin are clinically proven to relax the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles (think frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines). It’s safe, effective, and when done properly, gives you a natural, refreshed look—not frozen. Unlike tape, Botox treats the root of the problem: repetitive muscle contractions.

2. A Consistent, Medical-Grade Skincare Routine

You need to treat your skin from the outside, too. A good skincare regimen with ingredients like retinoids, vitamin C, peptides, and broad-spectrum SPF will protect and repair your skin. This helps build collagen, improve texture, and keep your skin resilient.

3. Professional Skin Treatments

Regular treatments like microneedling, chemical peels, Neogen, and biostimulators can make a massive difference. These treatments stimulate collagen and elastin production—two of the key proteins responsible for firm, youthful skin.

4. Lifestyle Factors Matter

Don’t forget the basics: stay hydrated, eat antioxidant-rich foods, manage stress, and get good sleep. These all support skin health from the inside out.

Final Thoughts

Face taping might be trending, but it's no replacement for real, science-backed solutions. If you’re investing time and money into your skin, you deserve treatments that actually deliver results.

Instead of slapping tape on your face at night and hoping for the best, come in for a personalised consultation. Let’s build a strategy that supports long-term skin health—no gimmicks required.
